Robert Michael Gates is a US intelligence analyst and university president, serving as the 22nd Secretary of Defense from 2006 to 2011. He was originally appointed by President George W. Bush and is being retained by President Barack Obama to serve. Gates began his career as an officer in the United States Air Force, but was quickly recruited into the Central Intelligence Service. Gates served for 26 years with the CIA and the National Security Council, and as the central intelligence director under President George H. W. Bush. After leaving the CIA, Gates became president of Texas A&M University and a member of several boards. Gates was a member of the Iraqi Research Group, a bipartisan committee co-chaired by James A. Baker III and Lee H. Hamilton, studying the lessons of the Iraq war. Gates was appointed by Republican President George W. Bush as Secretary of Defense two years after the 2004 election, replacing Donald Rumsfeld.
